Should the province spend billions to protect Sumas Prairie? Fraser Valley election candidates answer

We asked Fraser Valley candidates for the 2024 BC Election whether their government would provide funding flood protection for Sumas Prairie

In 2021, Sumas Lake returned to Abbotsford because of flooding from the Nooksack River to the south and an unusually high Fraser River to the north. The city is still dealing with the aftermath.

Abbotsford currently has a $3 billion plan to protect Sumas Prairie, but its application to the federal government for funding has been denied. Some have suggested Sumas Lake be allowed to return instead.

We asked all Fraser Valley candidates whether their government would provide funding for flood protections in Sumas Prairie.

Unfortunately, most BC Conservative candidates did not respond to our survey. The valley’s NDP candidates also refused to abide by The Current’s multiple-choice format, which was created in order to force candidates to demonstrate their personal priorities.
