Should climate change be factored into infrastructure planning? Fraser Valley election candidates answer
We asked Fraser Valley candidates for the 2024 BC Election whether climate change projections should be taken into account when setting infrastructure standards
Climate change has made disasters more frequent and more severe—and that has implications for rebuilding damaged buildings and establishing new infrastructure.
In Abbotsford, climate change could make flooding from the Nooksack River more likely, and reduce the efficacy of the Barrowtown Pump Station that the city relies on to keep Sumas Prairie dry.
In places like Lytton, increasingly arid conditions could make debilitating fires more likely as time goes on.
Given the rhetoric surrounding climate change policies from some candidates and parties, we asked all Fraser Valley candidates whether climate change projections should be taken into account when setting building and infrastructure standards.
Unfortunately, many Conservative candidates did not respond to our survey. The valley’s NDP candidates also refused to abide by The Current’s multiple-choice format, which was created in order to force candidates to demonstrate their personal priorities.
