Should farmland ever be removed from the Agriculture Land Reserve? Fraser Valley election candidates answer
We asked Fraser Valley candidates for the 2024 BC Election whether they would support removing land from the ALR
The Fraser Valley is growing, but the expansion in cities, neighbourhoods, and industrial areas is constrained by the Agricultural Land Reserve.
Some developers and officials argue that it should be easier to remove land in the ALR—although different people have different ideas about how that land should be used. Others argue that the Agriculture Land Reserve is an essential resource to protect food production and ensure BC can feed itself in the future.
We asked all Fraser Valley candidates whether, and for what purpose, they would support removing land from the ALR. (Candidates were allowed to select more than one answer.)
Unfortunately, many BC Conservative candidates did not respond to our survey. The valley’s NDP candidates also refused to abide by The Current’s multiple-choice format, which was created in order to force candidates to demonstrate their personal priorities.
