FVC INSIDER

⛅ High 11C

Good morning!

The Vancouver Aquarium can be pretty heavy-handed with its ocean conservation messaging. Save the fish! Save the ocean! Stop overfishing and plastic pollution and climate change!

For people who get it, it can feel pretty over the top. We’re doing our part to help the ocean—why can’t we just come here to look at the fish?

But others still don’t know what’s threatening the ocean. They may only hear those messages on the rare occasion they want to see an old-fashioned dolphin show. So one could argue it’s important to plaster the message next to every fish, and on every solid surface, in hopes that even the most casual observer will hear about the challenges, and decide to help.

I say this today because The Current is kind of like the fish at the aquarium. So far, we’re doing okay. We’re still swimming in our BC journalism tank. And we’re glad you all are coming here to take a look at what we are writing each day.

But if we don’t increase our paid membership, we may not survive. And to make sure we get that point across, we’re going to keep hammering on that message for the next while. Once you become a member, you’ll stop hearing about it—I promise. Today I’m telling Insiders about an octopus and fish who hunt as a team.

Your thoughts on cat rules

A purring cat on the foot of a bed is the epitome of coziness, but that is where they should stay, according to many FVC readers. And perhaps, maybe there should be a limit on how many cats are allowed on your bed.

This month, we asked you about your thoughts on rules and regulations around cat ownership. Advocates have approached councils in Langley City and Chilliwack to request more rules for cats, including capping the number of cats a person can own. Last month, Langley City council suggested they would be open to limiting the number of cats at six per household

A resounding majority of FVC respondents agreed. Roughly 80% of respondents said there should be limits on the number of cats a person can own. And more than 100 readers wrote in to share their thoughts on what municipalities should do to regulate cats.

The Agenda

A three-storey mixed-use building is proposed for Hope’s waterfront area. 📷 District of Hope

New apartments proposed for Hope

A new mixed-use apartment and commercial building has been proposed on Water Avenue in Hope.

The three-storey building would face the Fraser River and include office space on the bottom floor, as well as have a 16-space parkade, and two floors of apartments. The eight new apartments would each be about 1,500 square feet.

Hope municipal staff noted that the development fits with the district’s downtown revitalization plan. It has the mixed-use that staff say is needed, as well as the necessary sloped rooflines to “match the surrounding mountains.”

Hope’s council issued a development permit for the building last week.
