Good morning!

Some of you may have noticed we’ve had some challenges with our weather forecast recently. Environment Canada recently changed their website, and the new URLs seem to be wreaking havoc on our newsletter system. Until we can figure out how to fix the problem, we’re going to switch to the Weather Network.

As we make the temporary switch, we want to know: which forecast do you prefer?

What’s up in September

For many people, September marks the return to routine. The end of lazy summer days and the beginning of school, work, and responsibilities.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t activities to shake up the month. From a Great Gatsby themed swing dance to a celebration of resiliency to the crowning of corn royalty, there are a lot of events going on in the Fraser Valley.

September will also give locals a chance to think about Canada’s relationship with Indigenous nations. The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, happens on Sept. 30, giving non-Indigenous people a chance to learn more about Stó:lō culture and providing an opportunity for everyone to better understand what reconciliation could look like in the Fraser Valley.

The Agenda

Replacing old Mission bridge to cost at least $3 million

Replacing a short 42-year-old bridge is set to cost Mission taxpayers $3 million over the coming years.

Last year, city crews noticed that the south end of the Wren Street bridge was starting to sink. Engineers were brought in and found an array of problems with the structure, which crosses a small stream and connects the bulk of the town to Mission Sports Park and the surrounding Silverdale area.

Engineers told the city that it would cost around $300,000 to rehabilitate the bridge. Doing so would allow it to last another decade or so. Alternatively, the city could replace the failing structure entirely with a new bridge or culvert crossing; that would cost around $3 million, but the new crossing could last until the turn of the next century.

Mission staff have endorsed the long-term bridge replacement, but the plan will go to Mission’s council today to include the project in the city’s capital plan. With permits still needed for any new bridge, construction won’t take place until at least 2026, however, and staff say costs could rise further over the coming years.
