Good morning!

No man is an island, and the Fraser Valley Current is no exception. Although it may look like we do things on our own, The Current is actually part of a suite of local newsletters owned by Overstory Media Group. One of our sister newsletters is the Georgia Straight, which some Vancouverites may know for its arts and culture coverage. We’re also associated with the Burnaby Beacon, who does local coverage in the Burnaby area, as well as Capital Daily on the Island and The Coast over in Nova Scotia. So if you’re looking for some other great daily or biweekly reads, feel free to check out our sister pubs, all of which you can find here.

Theatre company still seeks home

Camille Atebe spoke with exhaustion and emotion Tuesday about the inability for her community theatre group to find a new home since the City of Mission closed down the non-profit stage last year.

Last summer, a city inspector declared Opening Nite Theatre’s long-time rented space in downtown Mission to be unsuitable to host audiences. That left the group searching for a new home.

The City of Mission pledged to help, but Atebe, Opening Nite’s longtime president, told council last week that there are no easy solutions to the city’s lack of performance space. She suggested that if the city’s politicians are serious about supporting its local cultural community, they may have to make good on an idea that has been lingering in the background for 17 years.

The Agenda

The District of Kent is in the market for a pickup truck to complement the existing fire department vehicles. 📷 Agassiz Fire Department/Facebook

New pickup truck coming for District of Kent, eventually

Buying a new truck can be tricky—and not just for young people with bad credit. Sometimes, even small municipalities hit bumps in the road.

The District of Kent is in the market for a new pickup truck for the region’s FireSmart co-ordinator. The role is a two-year position that involves educating residents and preparing them for potential wildfires, and will likely involve plenty of traveling around the area.

District staff had their eye on a Ford Ranger from a Chilliwack dealership. Councillors gave staff the go-ahead to sign a 24-month lease for the truck at the end of April. Unfortunately, when district staff got back to the dealership, another customer had already bought the truck.

Instead, staff have suggested a similar truck (a Chevrolet, this time) from the Hope dealership. FireSmart grant funding from the Union of BC Municipalities will cover the cost of the two-year lease.
