☀ High 22C / Your forecast
Good morning!
I went to the dentist last week, and the dental hygienist asked about my summer plans. Osoyoos, I said. I told her our family always goes in the middle of July. Good, she replied: “hopefully you’ll miss the wildfires.”
It feels like that should be dialogue out of some post-apocalyptic novel, but it’s just the reality in Canada. Wildfire seasons are getting worse, coming earlier, and staying longer. Manitoba and Saskatchewan are both under province-wide states of emergency, the entire town of Flin Flon has been evacuated, and two people have died after being trapped by a wildfire in Lac du Bonnet.
My hope is that Canada has already experienced the worst of its fire season. I suspect that won’t be the case. (As Tyler has written, BC’s wildfire season tends to start later than in the prairies.) If you live in a wildfire-prone area, make sure you FireSmart your home and are prepared with a go-bag for when an evacuation order comes. And be sure to follow fire bans—the more fires we can prevent, the better off we all will be.

New archery competition coming to the Fraser Valley
Sasquatch Mountain resort is hosting an archery competition this month that will introduce a new style of the sport to the Fraser Valley.
The Canadian Archery Challenge will be held from Friday, June 20 to Sunday, June 22 for a weekend of archery, music, and exhibitions on the mountain.
The event’s main attraction will be two 3D archery courses. Archers will ride the lift to the top of the hill, hike through a mountainous course, and shoot at foam animal targets at stations along the way. The alpine-course style of competition is more popular south of the border and is new to the Fraser Valley.
The event is expected to draw 250 to 300 people for the weekend, and the resort has asked the Fraser Valley Regional District for permission to allow some guests to camp overnight in one of the resort’s parking lots. Up to 40 people are expected to use the on-site camping option, which will not have water or sewer hookups but will have access to restrooms in the resort’s lodge.
Registration is open for the Canadian Archery Challenge (and for camping spots in the parking lot) until the event begins.
