Thursday - Jan. 9, 2025 - Tourism impact survey looks to Harrison

Good morning!

I am a fan of niche reality shows. Survivor? I’ve heard of it. The Bachelor? All right I guess. Regency House Party on the other hand—that classic of early 2000s historical reenactment reality TV, available on YouTube? That’s the good stuff.

My daughter seems to have acquired my somewhat eclectic taste. While home sick from school, she discovered the reality show Baking Impossible, where bakers and engineers join forces to make edible and functional boats, robots, cars, and bridges. It is spectacular. I am a huge fan. (You can watch it on Netflix if you’re interested.) And more than just making for good TV, it also sparked some creative gears in my daughter’s head as well. I think I know exactly the kind of projects she will want to undertake with her engineer dad this summer.

The Agenda

Harrison Hot Springs can be a mecca for tourists, particularly during the summer, and one researcher wants to know how that affects local residents. 📷 Tourism Harrison/Facebook

Harrison Hot Springs residents invited to share their take on tourism

From ski hills to surf spots to hot springs and spas, BC has no shortage of major tourist attractions, but the happy hordes of seasonal guests aren’t the only people affected by their quests for rest, relaxation, and adventure. Resort towns’ residents are impacted as well.

A master's student at the Univeristy of Vancouver Island is trying to study the effect of tourism on BC’s resort towns residents, including those in the Fraser Valley.

Residents of Harrison Hot Springs have been invited to participate in the research project by taking a short survey that will help measure the impact of tourism in BC small towns. The survey asks questions about how tourism affects local housing, infrastructure, and community amenities, among other things.

Residents who take the survey will be entered to win one of three $50 gift cards to a local grocery store of their choice. The survey is only available to people who live in Harrison Hot Springs, or other resort municipality towns like Osoyoos, Tofino, and Whistler.
