Thursday - Feb. 6, 2025 - Expansion on the way for Popkum fire hall

Good morning!

How many cats is too many cats? Six-year-old me, in her infinite wisdom, decided that number should be 100. They would live outside, and I would have dozens of cat food bowls in rows on my porch for them. (In retrospect, I wanted to host a feral cat colony.)

One hundred cats is, of course, an absurd number. Some advocates are going to municipalities like the City of Langley and Chilliwack to ask for a much smaller hard cap on the number of felines one person can have. We figured some of you folks would have thoughts on the subject—including whether cat ownership in general should be regulated. You can share those thoughts with us for our next FVC Perspectives issue.

The Agenda

Expansion on the way for Popkum fire hall

The small building that holds Popkum’s fire department is set for an expansion that will bring more space for both fire trucks and administration.

“As the community of Popkum grows, so too do the needs of the fire hall,” FVRD staff wrote in a report. “The 40-year-old building now requires significant expansion to allow for both operations and administration.”

The current fire hall was last renovated in the early 1990s, and currently has three bays for firefighting vehicles, but limited space for administrative work. The Fraser Valley Regional District says the expansion will add a 5,000-square-foot addition to the existing hall. The addition will be two storeys and include a twin bay for trucks, a main floor, an upstairs training room and office space.

The FVRD is looking for quotes from contractors to design and build the addition and renovate the existing space. The deadline for quotations is tomorrow.
