Love is in the air and activities are on the calendar this February.

In the Fraser Valley, the year’s shortest month will feature events for folks wanting to do their part for charity, music lovers wanting to indulge their ears, and teens wanting to get out of the house and do something fun.

There are also options for people wanting to learn more about Black History Month, indulge in some Valentine’s Day laughs, and celebrate the Family Day long weekend.

Langley

This month, Langley is letting its hair down with after-hours teen tag, a swinging evening, and a comedy-filled Valentine's night.

Library laser tag

In the heart of every youth is the rebellious desire to sneak around a community building after dark. On Friday, Feb. 7, teens in Aldergrove will get that very chance—thanks to a game of after-hours laser tag.

Youths aged 12 to 18 can sign up to participate in a game of laser tag at the Aldergrove Library after the library is closed. Pizza will be provided and registration is required. (If registration is full, be sure to get on the waitlist—if there’s enough interest, the library might host another after-hours teen night.)

The event begins at 5:30pm on Friday, Feb. 7 and goes for an hour. Registration is available through the Fraser Valley Regional Library.

My Cousin’s Wedding — Swing Edition

When was the last time you danced the night away like you did at the last family wedding? Langley’s Bez Arts Hub wants to give you that experience, without having to sit through an hours-long ceremony and awkward speeches.

The Bez Arts Hub hosts its all-ages dance on Friday, Feb. 7. This month, the theme is swing. The evening begins at 7pm, with a lesson starting at 7:30pm to make sure everyone has at least one swing dance move they can enjoy. Dancing continues until 10:30pm, with a best-dressed competition thrown in the mix.

Tickets are $18.50, although it's cheaper if you bring four, five, or six people. Details are available online.

Bring Your Crush Comedy Night

Love is a funny thing. Which is why Five Roads Brewing is inviting you to bring your crush out for a comedy night on Valentine’s Day.

The show will be held at the craft brewery on Friday, Feb. 14. The night will feature performances by Ray Morrison (“In the last eight years I’ve had eight surgeries: nothing serious, but clearly nothing cosmetic either”), Will Corry (“A five-pound family-sized lasagna costs the same as a five-pound bag of onions if you use self-checkout”), Randii Andii (“It is short for my real name, which is Randrew Andrew”), and Amit Solanki (“I do keep that thick Indian accent in my back pocket … especially when I am calling customer service”).

The show begins at 7:30pm on Valentine’s Day, and all seating is general admission. All ages are welcome, although not all jokes may be family friendly. Tickets are $20 and available online.

Abbotsford-Mission

Activities in Abbotsford and Mission this month are all about celebrating diversity and helping folks in need.

Cultural Contributions: The Impact of Black Art, Music, and Literature

The City of Abbotsford is taking an evening to celebrate the impact of Black artists during the Black History Month edition of its Culture City program.

The cultural presentation will take place on Sunday, Feb. 8 at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, and feature dance, spoken word, and interactive arts. The artists have been chosen by the Fraser Valley Heritage Elevation Society, which aims to celebrate community, connection, and culture.

The Cultural Contributions night begins at 4pm and is free for everyone to attend—with no registration required. More details are available online.

The Coldest Night of the Year

The mercury in the thermometer might not actually be the lowest of the year, but the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser will make sure everyone has a warm heart regardless.

The annual fundraiser raises money for people experiencing homelessness and hunger across Canada. On Saturday, Feb. 22, people in Abbotsford will be able to come together for a family-friendly walk to raise money for the Cyrus Centre. The walk will begin at 4pm at the Sevenoaks Alliance Church, and will include snacks part way through from COBS Bread and Starbucks. The walk has 2km and 5km options.

Registration is free and available online. People who raise more than $150 (or $75 for those under 18) will get a free toque.

Diverse Voices poetry night

Indigenous artists, Black poets, and other people of colour are invited to share their experiences through spoken word at Archway’s Diverse Voices poetry night. Everyone else is invited to listen, learn, and connect with perspectives other than their own.

The poetry night will take place on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 6pm in Abbotsford’s Open Space, and feature an intimate setting for people to share their experiences and words. Interested poets can sign up by emailing Melissa at [email protected] by Monday, Feb. 10. Poems should be five minutes or less, and touch on themes of resiliency, identity, and community.

The event is free, although attendees must be 18 or older. Non-alcoholic drinks and light snacks will be provided, and registration is required.

Eastern Fraser Valley

In Chilliwack and the eastern Fraser Valley, people can spend the month listening to music and tasting great food.

Taste of the Valley

What does the Fraser Valley taste like? Find out at Chilliwack Heritage Park on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8.

The Taste of the Valley will offer delicacies from a selection of local food and drink artisans during its market. Samples will be available from vendors, and non-food options from soap-makers, charcuterie board designers, and visual artists will also be available. Kids under five get in for free, although pets are not allowed.

Tickets are $5 a piece at the door. The market goes from 3pm to 8pm on Friday, and 10am to 6pm on Saturday. More details available online.

Follow Your Heart benefit concert

Local country singer Todd Richard is ready to follow his heart yet again, and raise money for one of BC’s biggest children’s charities.

The third annual Follow Your Heart benefit concert will take place at Harrison's Memorial Hall on Saturday, Feb. 15 from 7 to 10pm. Richard composed his song “Follow Your Heart” for Variety Children’s Charity back in 2017. He pitched the idea of a benefit concert in 2023, and the fundraising effort quickly grew.

This year, the concert will feature performances by Richard and his band, as well as local musicians Miss Shauna, Trevor Murray, and Rick Tippe. Tickets are $32.50, with proceeds going to support the charity.

Cheam Vista Classical Concert Society

Head to Agassiz to fill your ears with a season of classical music.

The first concert in the 2025 of the Cheam Vista Classical Concert Society takes place on Thursday, Feb. 27 with the Foothills Brass. The Albertan brass quintet first performed for the concert society back in 2019, and is set to return with more of their eclectic repertoire. This concert is only the first of four for the year.

The Current wrote last year about Cheam Vista’s goal of promoting classical music at a local level. You can read that story here.

A subscription to the entire concert society’s entire season is $110 for adults (significantly less for seniors and youth). The subscription can be shared, so you and some friends can rotate through the concert series. Details and subscription forms are available online.

Family Day

The Family Day long weekend takes place from Saturday, Feb. 15 to Monday, Feb. 17. Families of all sorts can celebrate their time together with events focused on the environment, games, and free films.

Family Dungeons and Dragons

Grab your dice and your pencils, and prepare for an afternoon slaying dragons.

The Aldergrove Library hosts a family D&D session on Saturday, Feb. 15 between noon and 4pm. The game is geared towards an adult and at least one child (aged nine to 13) to play together, although teens aged 14 to 19 can play alone. The session is a stand-alone adventure, and all the supplies needed to play will be provided.

Registration is required; interested participants can get their name on the list by calling 604-856-6415 or emailing [email protected]. If the session is full, don’t fret. Other family role-playing days will be held in March and April at the library.

Family Movie Night

Pull out the popcorn for a pair of free films at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre.

On Sunday, Feb. 16, families can grab a blanket and head to one of the rec centre’s gyms and pick from a selection of two family-friendly films. The Emperor’s New Groove begins at 5pm, while Spy Kids 2 starts at 7:30pm.

Both events are free, but registration is required in advance. More details are available online.

Family Day at the Fort Langley National Historic Site

Meet an owl, learn to take great wildlife photos, and check out scat and skulls—all in one place.

The Fort Langley National Historic Site will celebrate Family Day (Monday, Feb. 17) with a focus on biodiversity. The day’s events include a meet-and-greet with a raptor from the Orphaned Wildlife Society, a presentation on the habits of beavers, a conversation about Indigenous plants with Kwantlen elder Hazel Gludo, lessons on animal tracking with elder Karen Gabriel, and more.

Admission is $9 for adults, but free for kids 17 and under. Details on the day’s programming are available online.
