Wednesday - Jan. 17, 2024 - When it comes to poop, should we be less mature?

❄❄❄❄❄❄❄ High -4C

Good morning!

Yesterday’s intro led to a couple strange messages from people who seemed to think we were owned by Black Press. That’s not the case (as most seem to understand this). We’re owned by a newer and smaller company, called Overstory Media Group. It’s still a tough ride to make money in this business (I wouldn’t have been able to start this without the support of a company to help pay for my family’s groceries!) and success is far from certain. We just hope that relying on reader support will bring a measure of stability. Just so there’s no confusion!

You’ll likely wake up to snow this morning. Yesterday, we provided a plethora of links where you can find vital information about the storm. If you’ve deleted that email from your inbox, you can find the newsletter and all those links here.

Let’s talk about poop

It’s just poop. Grow up. Or actually, maybe don’t.

Navjit Kaur Moore wishes adults would be a little less precious about their bowel movements and act a little more like children.

Moore, who has spent years leading support groups for those with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), says that when it comes to talking about the real symptoms of IBD, there’s no one like a kid to cut to the heart of the matter.

“When you’re interacting with kids, they don’t have these societal concepts, so they’re just talking about poop like it’s any other day, like any other subject,” says Moore, who was recognized last week with one of British Columbia’s highest honours, the Medal of Good Citizenship. “It would be nice if adults could get back to that and were able to talk about poop or bowel habits just as regularly as we’re able to talk about our diet.”

The Agenda

Snow-clearing in rural communities like Slesse Park doesn’t begin until all highways in the region have been cleared. 🗺 Ministry of Transportation

Rural communities at end of snow-clearing line

Yesterday, we shared the snow-clearing priority maps for local municipalities. But if you use roads in a rural, unincorporated area, neither that information, nor the government that provides most of your local services, will help you.

The Fraser Valley Regional District handles most services in electoral areas and communities like the Chilliwack River Valley, Sunshine Valley, Laidlaw, Boston Bar, and Lake Errock. But the FVRD doesn’t clean roads. Instead, that job is administered by the provincial government and contracted out to Emil Anderson Maintenance. You can find specific road designations on a provincial map, though the process is a little complicated. A devoted and well-informed FVC reader has put together a list of instructions to see your road for yourself. You can find the map here and the instructions here.

Community journalism needs the entire community for it to succeed.
