FVC INSIDER

🌦 High 16C

Good morning!

My kids discovered Mt. Baker yesterday. We were driving home from Langley a little later than usual, and the sun lit up the volcano at the perfect angle to accentuate its peak against the sky.

ā€œLook at the volcano!ā€ I said, pointing. Then some trees covered it up. The kids spent the next few kilometres waiting for the mountain to be revealed, wondering why it was taking so long for the trees to move. When it finally appeared again, there were oohs, ahs, and the sound of the Star Wars theme being sung in the backseat.

There were, also, a lot of questions. How do volcanoes erupt? How are mountains made? Why do mountains have names? Why does the volcano have so much snow? The latter question I was thankfully able to answer because of the many, many times I edited Tyler’s story on Mt. Baker and the Nooksack River. You can read that story here.

Crumbling bridge, nesting herons

The centre bridge in Chilliwack’s Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is closed after staff found the wood beams holding up the bridge were crumbling and unsafe. šŸ“· Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve

People who want to access much of Chilliwack’s Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve will have to take the long way around the wetland park—at least until the herons finish having their babies or a bridge can be fixed.

The Agenda

Aldergrove’s Outdoor Experience opens on the May long weekend, with priority access for Langley residents. šŸ“· Township of Langley Recreation/Facebook

Aldergrove’s waterpark opens May long weekend

Aldergrove’s extremely popular waterpark is set to open for the season next Friday (May 16).

The Outdoor Experience at the Aldergrove Community Centre first opened in 2018, and had become so popular by 2022 that some Aldergrove residents complained they were unable to secure a reservation at the park. (You can read The Current’s story on that here.)

Langley Township residents have priority access to the waterpark, which is one of the cheapest in the region. (The adult pass for the Aldergrove waterpark is $10, while kids can get in for $5.)

Langley residents can access online bookings for the waterpark 10 days before the day they want to attend. Non-residents can register a week in advance. Reservations are for specific times of day, and everyone visiting the waterpark needs to register, even if they don’t plan on swimming.

The Outdoor Experience will be open on weekends only until Sunday, June 22. Friday, June 27 marks the start of the summer schedule, with the waterpark open daily, with multiple sessions each day.

Groups of 20 or more can book a designated group area ahead of time. Group registration for Langley residents opens on the second of each month, for bookings taking place the following month. (Book in May to have a birthday party in June, for example.) Group bookings for non-residents open three days later.

More details on the waterpark and the booking process are available online.
