Good morning!

Just a quick note to let you all know that we are heading into a long weekend. The forecast is anticipating rain, so there shouldn’t be too many sunburns when we all return on Tuesday. Enjoy your Saturday, Sunday, and Monday off. (Unless you work in retail, do shift work at the hospital, drive a taxi, or are on call in some other way over the weekend, in which case thank you for keeping the city running while the rest of us laze about.)

See you Tuesday!

– Grace

Your local farmers market guide

The Fraser Valley has more than 10 local farmers markets residents can visit during the summer. 📷 Ground Picture/Shutterstock

It’s not every day that you can wander through a park and pick up a container of eggs, some handmade soap, a bunch of fresh carrots, and a bouquet of freshly picked flowers. But then again, not every day is a farmers market.

Throughout the summer, markets will be springing up at parks throughout the Fraser Valley. Most will happen on weekend mornings, kicking off a few days of relaxation with a collection of local goods and fresh produce. Others will run on weekday nights, bringing some shop-local vibes to the middle of the work week.

We’ve collected farmers markets from each Fraser Valley community and figured out when they are happening, where you can find them, and—most importantly—how long you have to get there before the last market of the season.

Mission hospital to get $18-million emergency room upgrades

Mission Memorial Hospital will increase the size of its emergency department with an $18-million upgrade.

In 2024, the hospital experienced a major flood which required emergency repairs to its emergency room. With those repairs now finished, Fraser Health is beginning work on a large-scale renovation project that will add another 17 care spaces to the ER. (The finished emergency department will have space for 41 patients at a time.)

The $18-million project is currently in the design phase. Fraser Health says the renovations will include a new resuscitation room, with a dedicated space for people experiencing heart attacks. It will also have an airborne isolation room, so people with infectious diseases can remain separated from other patients.

The project will also look to redesign the existing space, adding better sight lines for health care staff and clear exit paths for use during emergencies.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2026, with upgrades finished by spring 2027. The emergency department has been temporarily moved to another part of the hospital in anticipation of the construction, and is expected to stay open while work is underway.

People seeking care from Mission Memorial have been told several times in the last two years to go to another hospital, however these “service interruptions” have been a result of staffing rather than construction. The most recent closure was at the end of March this year.
