Friday - June 13, 2025 - FVRD to undertake new trail survey

⛅ High 20C

Good morning!

Star Wars is good. Star Wars is great even. But have you heard about Spaceballs? If not, you are missing out. The Mel Brooks film is a parody of George Lucas’ space opera, and includes iconic Canadian actors Rick Moranis (in his role as the Darth Vader-inspired-villain Dark Helmet) and John Candy (in his role as Barf, the wookie-style sidekick to Bill Pullman’s Lone Star). It criticizes the merchandising lust of the movie industry and the consumerism of the modern world, while including a reference to the Michigan J. Frog version of “Hello! Ma Baby.”

You can watch Spaceballs on Amazon Prime (or on YouTube apparently). And in 2027, you’ll be able to watch the sequel in theatres.

In the original, Mel Brooks joked that a sequel would be called Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money. The new trailer is not clear on whether that title will prevail. But several actors will be reprising their roles from the original, including the elusive Moranis, who had largely retired from acting after his wife’s death in the 1990s.

It takes a lot to get me out to the theatre. Spaceballs 2 will definitely do it.

UFV president predicts unexpected enrolment drop

The University of the Fraser Valley’s incoming president says international student enrolment is expected to plunge by 23%. 📷️ Grace Kennedy

Reality may be blowing a multi-million-dollar hole in the University of the Fraser Valley’s optimistic budget plans.

This spring the university passed a budget that avoided the large-scale cost-cutting planned at other BC universities reliant on international student tuition. But now UFV administrators are now warning of plunging foreign student numbers, and facing the prospect that they too will no longer be able to count on international tuition to balance their books.

The Agenda

The Fraser Valley Regional District plans to survey trail and park users this summer at 15 locations, including the Cheam Lake Wetlands Regional Park. 📷 FVRD/Facebook

FVRD wants a better understanding of local trail use

The Fraser Valley Regional District hopes to better understand how residents and visitors are exploring local parks, and is undertaking a survey this summer to do so.

In 2010, the FVRD and Metro Vancouver worked together on an analysis of how people used local parks and trails throughout the Lower Mainland. But while Metro Vancouver completed follow-up surveys in 2019 and 2024, the Fraser Valley wasn’t included in those efforts.

Now, the FVRD is doing its own survey to learn how people use regional parks and trails.

Survey data will be gathered through an online questionnaire and in-person surveys at 15 different locations, including Cheam Ridge Trail, which can be accessed by driving an hour-and-a-half on rough, unpaved forest service roads. People will be on site during August and September of this year.

Questionnaires will also be mailed to people living near 11 different local parks, including Popkum Community Trail, Shannon Park, Lake Errock Park, and Cedar Community Park.

The FVRD is currently soliciting proposals for the project. The regional district has said it has a budget of $48,500 for the survey and the analysis. Responses to the request for proposals are due next week, and the contract is expected to be awarded in early July. A final report would be expected by the end of November 2025.
