Go dry—and give women the vote

Sept. 14, 1916, was a day of change in British Columbia. On that day, voters headed to the polls to elect a new provincial government. A century later though, the defeat of the provincial Conservative party is less interesting than the results of two referendums on the ballot.

Because on that September day 108 years ago, BC voters headed to the polls to decide on two big questions: whether women would have the right to vote provincially, and whether alcohol would become illegal.

The Agenda

FVRD aims to educate on air quality

The Fraser Valley Regional District is hoping to teach the valley’s incoming Grade 5 students about how to take better care of our air.

The FVRD recently put out a request for proposals to have an organization to develop an air quality education program. The program would be geared towards Grade 5 classes, and teach students about what an airshed is, what degrades the quality of air within the airshed, and what actions they can take to protect the air in their area.

The organization would need to develop contacts with teachers throughout the Fraser Valley, and offer a minimum of 50 one-hour workshops in public and private schools each year. (They would also need to provide a year-end report outlining what work they undertook.)

Organizations had until Thursday to submit their bids. The successful proponent will be doing classroom visits during the next three academic years.
