Fraser Valley Current

Monday, August 28, 2023 | 💨 High 28C

Good morning!

Pumpkin spice season is here. Last week, Starbucks’ famous seasonal drink returned to its menu—a little too early, I think. The drink is reportedly celebrating 20 years. (I was surprised to learn it has been around that long.) I’ll admit I am not a pumpkin spice fanatic. But it has been years since I tried the drink. Maybe I need to give it another go. Are you a devoted fan of the seasonal beverage? Let us know in today’s poll below.

Thanks to our newest members Kenneth and Mike for supporting The Current. Learn how you can become an insider here.

NEWS

Tourist in your town(s)

Local news reporters should know a little bit about the places they’re reporting on. That’s the theory. But the Fraser Valley’s a big place.

And when I (Grace) joined the Fraser Valley Current nearly a year ago, I didn’t know Agassiz from Harrison Hot Springs and had never been to either. The rest of the team here decided that someone would have to show me around.

And who better suited to that task than our spectacular readers?

Thus, the Tourist-in-your-town series was born.

In each of the articles in this series, a reporter ventures out to spend a day in an unfamiliar place, armed with recommendations from readers like you who know the area.

In these stories, you’ll get an inside look at local cafes, little restaurants, walks and hikes, museums, and other activities in each featured neighbourhood.

The Agenda

Highway 1 re-opening update expected Monday

Last week, the transportation ministry confirmed the temporary bridge that was constructed over the Falls Creek gully on Jackass Mountain did not sustain any damage and an update on the re-opening of Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon is expected Monday.

The temporary structure was constructed after the 2021 atmospheric river carried away a large section of highway. An engineer was called in to assess the structure after the still active Kookipi Creek fire “burned trees on the bluffs above the highway, resulting in falling trees and boulders along the affected area.”

Maintenance along the corridor is underway, the ministry said in a statement. And the progress on the re-opening of the highway will depend on the weather and fire activity.

Correction

In last week’s agenda section, we referred to a planned ignition at the Kookipi Creek fire as a “controlled burn.” While the planned ignition is intentional, the term controlled burn refers to a prescribed fire used in forest management, as Chilliwack-based wildfire expert Robert Gray told The Current. We apologize for the error.
