The Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation (FVHCF) marked its 25th anniversary with a major fundraising milestone. The organization’s Grand Gala, held November 27, brought in nearly $300,000 to support local hospitals—and completed funding for a crucial new diagnostic tool at Abbotsford Regional Hospital.
The money fully supports the purchase of a $500,000 endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) unit, which is used to diagnose lung cancer. More than 300 people in the Fraser Valley are diagnosed with the disease each year, and current wait times for testing can stretch up to 80 days. At the moment, the closest location offering the procedure is Royal Columbian Hospital.
Dr. David Liu, site medical director at Abbotsford Regional Hospital, says the new equipment will mean faster answers for patients. “Using ultrasound guidance, the respirologist can more accurately identify suspicious areas and obtain biopsies. This approach reduces the need for repeated procedures and improves overall diagnostic accuracy,” he said.
Bringing this technology to Abbotsford will shorten travel times, ease pressure on existing sites, and allow patients to receive specialized care closer to home.
A milestone year and a night of fundraising
The anniversary gala recognized the donors, volunteers, hospital auxiliaries, and community members who have backed the Foundation since its start 25 years ago. Hosted by Global News reporter Taya Fast with auctioneer Marco Iannuzzi, the evening featured both live and silent auctions that together raised more than $40,000.
Live auction items ranged from Abbotsford Canucks suite tickets to a private dinner prepared by Great Canadian Baking Show judge Bruno Feldeisen, an electric bike, a lab-grown diamond necklace, and a weeklong stay in Osoyoos.
Another major highlight was the “Fund a Need” initiative, which raised more than $120,000 to support priority equipment at Abbotsford Regional Hospital, Chilliwack General Hospital, Fraser Canyon Hospital, and Mission Memorial Hospital.
FVHCF executive director Liz Harris said the community’s support reflects a long-standing commitment to strengthening local health care. “We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who joined us in celebrating 25 years in the community,” she said. “The generosity and support have been truly inspiring.”
