Chilliwack

Estimated eligible voters: 68,897

Once again, Chilliwack is heading into a race for a new mayor. Incumbent Mayor Ken Popove was nearly acclaimed, but a last-minute entry by Ian Carmichael has turned the one-man election into a two-man race. Only five of the six incumbent councillors are running for re-election, meaning there will be at least one more new face on council.

How to vote

The municipal election officially takes place on Oct. 15, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only time you can cast a ballot. Advance voting is available, as is mail-in voting for most communities. No matter when you vote, you’ll be submitting your choices for both council and school board.

Before you cast your ballot, you’ll need to make sure you are eligible first. Voters must be at least 18 years old, a Canadian citizen, and have been a resident of BC for at least six months. You’ll also need to have lived in Chilliwack for at least 30 days before the election, or have owned a property in Chilliwack for at least 30 days.

Mail-in ballots will either be available at City Hall or will be mailed out, depending on what you selected during the application process. A notification will be sent out when mail-in ballots are ready to be picked up.

Completed ballots can be returned by mail or dropped off at City Hall (8550 Young Rd). Ballots can be returned during regular business hours, or put in the 24-hour drop box. All ballots must be returned by 8pm on Oct. 15 or they will not be counted. Voting places will not be receiving mail-in ballots.

Chilliwack school district

The Chilliwack school board has been anything but quiet during the last four years, with controversy kicking off during the 2018 election and ultimately resulting in the appointment of special advisors by the Ministry of Education. A by-election in February 2021 also created some school board heat, with four candidates splitting the community into socially conservative and socially progressive voters. Will the same thing happen this time around? Or will the new trustees find themselves in a school board that is, for the first time in years, moderately boring.
