In the year 2023, buildings are bound to a place, built and never moved.

But long before homes—even supposedly mobile homes—became largely immobile, buildings used to move all the time. You didn’t even need a combustible engine to make it happen. Even so, moving a church 70km in 1873 would not have been an easy proposition.

Which is where the canoes came in.

The Agenda

Three of the artists painting murals in the Chilliwack Mural Festival this summer were announced last week. 📷️ City of Chilliwack

New Chilliwack murals announced

The 2023 Chilliwack Mural Festival will include six new pieces of art added to the city’s streets.

While the mural festival will be held in mid-August, the artists and subjects of the first three new paintings have been determined.

Curtis Hylton, an experienced mural painter from the UK, is planning a mural depicting a belted kingfisher with pinecones and roses. He will be working on a brick wall in Thunderbird Alley.

Carolyn Wong, a Chinese Canadian artist who has painted murals in False Creek, Richmond, and Steveston, will also be working on a wall in Thunderbird Alley this summer. She’s painting a brightly-coloured summertime scene featuring this lunar year’s animal, the water rabbit.

Ronnie Harris, also known as Ostwelve, is a Stō:lo/St’át’imc/Nlaka’pamux artist with roots in Chilliwack. He’ll be working on a wall on Mary Street and is planning a welcoming mural based on origin stories and research from the area.

What the other three murals will depict—and who will paint them— hasn’t been announced yet.
