Wednesday, April 26, 2023 edition — Lytton's Lack Of Funding

Wednesday, April 26, 2023 | Today: 🌧 High 16C | 7-day forecast

Good morning!

Gifting is a lot of pressure. Getting someone a present that is thoughtful and useful is a lot of work, especially if it’s for an individual you’ve gifted to for many years. I’ve been racking my brain about Mother’s Day for some time now. Thankfully, my mom is someone who has never cared for material possessions and would always rather have her kids spend time with her to celebrate any occasion; so I know she’ll never be disappointed with whatever is hiding behind the wrapping paper. But if you have any Mother’s Day gift-suggestions I’m all ears. (I also expect to get a phone call from my mom now telling me she doesn’t need anything.)

And thanks to Hilda, Hendrik, and Amaris for joining our membership team and supporting local journalism. Learn how you can do the same.

Lytton’s lack of funds

An aerial view of Lytton. | Holly McKeen

In late March, Lytton’s council got some good news: by May, some residents could be allowed to take back control of their properties and finally start to rebuild homes incinerated in the town’s 2021 fire.

Today, though, the story seems much less rosy, with a lack of money and bureaucratic hurdles likely to force those residents to wait even longer.

Staff gym planned for Chilliwack General Hospital

Chilliwack General Hospital is replacing its indoor physical therapy pool with a gym for hospital staff.

The renovations include filling in the pool, which was on the first floor of Parkholm Place, and adding showers and lockers. The new fitness centre is slated to open this summer.

Though called a “Physician's Gym” in some documents, Fraser Health confirmed that the fitness centre will be available for a small fee to both medical and hospital staff. The Chilliwack Medical Staff Association purchased the equipment for the gym, and the Fraser Health Care Foundation funded the renovations.

Abbotsford Centre to get big-screen TV from London Drugs

Outfitting a hockey arena with a new centre-ice video system is a little more technical—and a lot more costly—than buying a big-screen TV for your living room. But the source of that TV might be the same.

Abbotsford Centre’s next video system will be bought from London Drugs, city and arena officials have decided. The cost will be a little higher than your latest trip to upgrade your TV though. The city previously set a $1.5 million budget for new video screens and LED facia displays. Now it has chosen to spend that money with TLD Computers, a London Drugs subsidiary specialising in audio/visual equipment.

The actual contract award is for $1.38 million, with about $120,000 set aside for any extra expenses.
