Tuesday, July 18, 2023 - A strike breakthrough

July 18, 2023 | ☀ High 25C

Good morning!

I’m back from a week’s vacation. I unplugged and took my kids up north to Mount Robson Provincial Park to camp with my brother and it was glorious!

Many thanks to Joti and Grace for capably holding down the fort and letting me unplug for 10 days. Want to help say thank you to them for covering the Fraser Valley on their own? Become a Current Insider member today and we’ll give you 25% off your first year.

The Agenda

New murals on deck for festival

Four more murals to be painted for this year’s Chilliwack Mural Festival look set for final sign-off from the city.

Both local and international artists will arrive to paint walls throughout the city this summer. A French mural artist from Marseille called Hengone will create a colourful geometric design that aims to illustrate “human movement, the chaos of life and love, and the stillness and power of the local mountains” at 9381 Mill St. (It will replace the current mural on the side of the building).

Jared Deck, a local artist, illustrator, and member of the Tzeachten First Nation will craft a mural in his contemporary Coast Salish art style on the wall of Unique Thrifting at 45873 Wellington Ave.

A street artist from Guangzhou, China, called SATR also has a mural proposed for this year’s festival. She atomizes spray paint to blend traditional western graffiti style and delicate eastern-style paintings for unique, smoky shapes. She will be painting at 1-45904 Victoria Ave.

Finally, local artist Carly Bouwman is planning a mural that will depict a “beautiful, peaceful and ethereal image of local endangered species.” She will be working on the side wall of Valley Cycle Locksmiths at 46275 Yale Rd.

Chilliwack council is set to approve the placement of the murals at its meeting Tuesday. The murals are in addition to three others approved by Chilliwack councillors two weeks ago. Originally, there were six paintings planned; the Chilliwack Mural Festival Committee recently added a seventh.

The designs for two new pump tracks and an update on water conservation in Chilliwack will also be on the table at the Chilliwack council meeting Tuesday afternoon.
