Friday, July 7, 2023 edition - The search for a lost champion tree

Fraser Valley Current

Friday, July 7, 2023 | 🌤 High 28C

Good morning!

With summer break upon us, my daughter decided to run her own camp for herself, her brother, and her stuffed animals. It had everything: comics, crafts, activities and more. My daughter created a poster/sign-up sheet, and her brother and all their stuffed animals signed up. The camp is now dead. A follow-up poster announced that it had been cancelled “due to bad reviews.” My daughter has created a new camp, this one focused on cooking. But, the poster notes, that due to the history of bad reviews, only one person (her brother) can sign up. Of course, he was the one who left the bad review so I’m not sure if that will solve the problem.

In tomorrow’s Insider weekend edition, Tyler writes about divorce, a girlfriend, an awkward conversation, and the first story he ever wrote for a major newspaper.

Today, Insiders can scroll to the member’s section at the bottom of the newsletter for a book recommendation from Joti. While reading the book, Joti learned the author had not only written about a murder but she may have witnessed one too.

NEWS

How does a 70-metre tall tree go missing?

It was the perfect specimen: the Chilliwack Giant. A grand fir that lived up to its name, its top towering above an old-growth rainforest canopy.

And then it disappeared.

Sean O’Rourke was determined to find it.

The Agenda

A six-storey building is proposed for the corner of First Avenue and Nowell Street. | City of Chilliwack

Public hearing scheduled for six-storey apartment building in Chilliwack

Chilliwack council is considering a new six-storey apartment building near downtown.

A 48-unit building was proposed for the corner of First Avenue and Nowell Street. The developer has applied to rezone three lots to allow for higher density. A public hearing for the proposal will be held on July 18.

Brookswood-Fernridge neighbourhood plans return to public hearing

The Township of Langley has revised three neighbourhood plans for the Brookswood-Fernridge, area triggering another public hearing.

Council made notable changes to the Booth, Fernridge, and Rinn neighbourhood plans after an open house and public hearing in May. At a June 26 meeting, council voted to revise density, land use, and the community amenity contribution policy.

If the revisions are approved by council the neighbourhoods would have a projected population of 46,000 residents in 16,000 dwellings, compared to a projected 63,000 residents in 20,000 dwellings stated in the original proposed plans.

The latest public hearing is scheduled for Monday at 7pm. View the proposed neighbourhood plans online.
