Thursday - Dec. 28, 2023 - The top environmental stories of 2023

🌧 High 10C

Good morning!

I love a good video game, and don’t think they are necessarily bad for kids. But I also know how they can consume one’s time and want my kids to be able to entertain themselves and find joy in other parts of life. So my wife and I have basically kept the kids away from video games to an extent that would probably sound draconian for many parents.

This Christmas, though, we’re changing things up. For a special family present (and after the heroics of a London Drugs employee named Brandon), we got a Nintendo Switch this year. The kids will now get to play games in lieu of normal (also-limited) cartoon-watching times. The idea is that the teamwork, social, and dexterity skills provided by video games make them at least as good as watching another episode of Garfield. So Mario Kart it is. But I also got this game on sale called Overcooked 2. Basically, you work as a team of cartoon cooks to make and serve food. As a co-operative family game, it’s challenging, hilarious, and a ton of fun—even when you accidentally set a pot of noodles on fire and burn down your pirate ship-turned-kitchen.

The Agenda

After years of effort, most structural exterior work has been completed on the historic Alexandra Lodge. 📷 Alexandra Lodge/Facebook

Structural work complete at the Alexandra Lodge

Structural work at the historic Alexandra Lodge was completed last month and interior work on the historic Fraser Valley landmark is now well underway.

The MacKinnon family, which owns the lodge, is working to return the building to its status as a bastion of tourism on the road through the canyon. We wrote about the efforts to save the lodge in 2022 and provided an update in February.

Over the last few months, the lodge has had its walls reattached to the floor and its bats removed from the attic. The main floor has some completed living space, as well as some of the first heating and insulation the lodge has ever had.

The focus is now on the second floor of the lodge, affectionately called “the old girl” on the Facebook page dedicated to her revival. However, some work is still needed to fix the lodge’s new roof after a leak was detected over the weekend.
