Chawathil (Chowéthel) First Nation and the Fraser Valley Regional District have signed a Memorandum of Understanding formalizing their working relationship. Chief Aaron Pete signed on behalf of Chawathil, with FVRD Board Chair Patricia Ross signing for the regional district.

The agreement sets up a framework for regular meetings and information-sharing between the two governments, covering priorities like land-use planning, transit, environmental stewardship, and emergency management. It builds on cooperation the two have already had on transit projects and responses to regional emergencies like atmospheric rivers and wildfires.

"This MOU reflects an existing relationship that Chawathil is proud to have with the Fraser Valley Regional District," said Chief Pete. "This agreement ensures that this relationship can endure beyond one term or one generation."

Ross said the agreement gives both governments a clearer path for working together going forward.

"This MOU provides a meaningful framework for continued work on shared priorities, helping both governments build stronger, more resilient communities," she said.

Leadership from both governments will meet twice during the MOU's first year, with more frequent staff-level meetings planned to support the work.
