Good morning!
It’s a slightly cooler and gloomier day today, but there’s a lot to look forward to over the weekend. I don’t know about you, but I’m loving the festive energy throughout the Lower Mainland with all the farmers’ markets, festivals and outdoor events.
My partner and I are planning on heading out to one of the many festivals happening in the Fraser Valley this weekend. I’m thinking the Fort Langley Jazz Festival sounds like a good one. This will be my first time attending it, I’ll let you know next week if I ever managed to get there and if it was as good as it sounds.
What are your favourite summer festivals or events? Any recommendations? I would love to hear from you!

Fraser Valley Regional District receives $40K for new evacuation route

The BC Provincial Government announced it will provide almost $2 million in funding for better evacuation routes and public notification systems. The province will provide the funds through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) to local governments and First Nations. The $2 million will go to 51 communities in BC including Langley Township and Boston Bar to develop and update their plans through 42 public notification and evacuation route planning projects.
In this round of funding, the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) is receiving $40,000 for a new evacuation route plan for Boston Bar Electoral Area A. In August 2023, the FVRD declared a state of emergency and evacuated residents in the area when the 485-hectare Kookipi Creek wildfire raged out of control. Evacuees from the region and neighbouring communities were directed to an emergency support services reception centre in Boston Bar.
Langley Township is also receiving $40,000 in provincial funding to update its evacuation route plan, integrate BC Alerting technology, and update the public notification plan and tabletop exercises.

Abbotsford PD investigates suspicious death in care home
Earlier this month, tragedy struck at Menno Home, a care home for seniors in Abbotsford. On Wednesday, July 23, Abbotsford Police Department sent out a chilling press release saying that the Major Crime Unit is investigating a suspicious death at Menno Home.
According to the statement, two residents were rushed to Abbotsford Regional Hospital on July 6, 2025. The hospital alerted the police that something was amiss with the two patients.
“Both individuals were experiencing medical emergencies that raised concerns due to their suspicious nature. Sadly, on July 10th, 2025, one of the patients did not survive,” AbbyPD said in a statement. “The investigation was promptly taken over by the AbbyPD Major Crime Unit. Detectives are currently in the early stages of this complex case and are working closely with Menno Home and other relevant stakeholders to uncover the circumstances surrounding these medical events.”
AbbyPD added that Menno Home has implemented additional measures to improve the safety of its residents, although it did not mention what those measures are.
Menno Home is a place for seniors to spend their retirement days. The retirement home’s website boasts recreation activities, 24-hour care, dietitian and pharmacy services and a special care unit for people with Alzheimer’s.
According to its website, there are currently 196 residents in long-term care at Menno Home and 151 residents at Menno Hospital. While the care home is a “faith-based” organization, it “welcomes residents from all ethnic and faith backgrounds.”
