Friday, June 23, 2023 edition - Transit strike mediator needs more time

Fraser Valley Current

Good morning!

If you notice you don’t see The Current’s stories on Facebook and Instagram it’s not by choice. On Thursday, Meta (which owns Facebook and Instagram) announced it would stop Canadians from accessing and sharing news on its platforms. The media giant was acting in response to the Senate passing the Online News Act.

Newsletters are a great way to access the news without having to rely on social media giants and governments. You already know that, but your friends and family may not. So share The Current with them and help ensure they don’t miss out on what’s happening in their communities! Also, if you value the work of our small but mighty team please consider supporting The Current by becoming an Insider member.

In Saturday’s Insider edition, Tyler will write about Facebook's decision to block news links and what it means for The Current and readers.

Today, Grace has a fun streaming recommendation in the members-only section at the bottom of the newsletter. (I can vouch for the intoxicating series, and I recall Tyler raving about it too.) Check it out below!

Transit strike mediator asks for more time

The special mediator appointed to help bring the Fraser Valley transit strike to an end has asked the province for more time.

On June 8, more than 100 days after buses ground to a halt, the province announced that it tasked veteran mediator Vince Ready to resolve the ongoing labour dispute between Fraser Valley bus drivers and their employer First Transit, a BC Transit contractor.

At the time, the province said Ready would work with both sides for up to 10 days. If a settlement was not reached, the province said Ready can form his own recommended settlement that each side can choose to accept. The 10 days have now come and gone.

Solved: Why the Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge safety system malfunctions

The $200,000 system to notify drivers that a cyclist is present on the Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge can’t actually distinguish between bicycles or automobiles.

The system is supposed to warn drivers when a slower cyclist is on the extended Fraser River crossing, which has no sidewalks or shoulders. But it fails regularly, with a Current reporter witnessing two false notifications within the span of five minutes last week.

Now, we know why.

The Agenda

Kwantlen artist designs new jersey for Vancouver Bandits

The Vancouver Bandits will be hitting the court on Sunday in a new jersey designed by Kwantlen First Nation artist Jeff Dickson.

“I wanted to create a uniform that represents ideas that are central to the Indigenous peoples of this land,” Dickson said in a Bandits press release.

The club is set to host its Indigenous Celebration Night when they take on the Calgary Surge at the Langley Events Centre Sunday.

A portion of the proceeds from each jersey sale will be donated to the Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society. Proceeds from Sunday’s 50/50 draw will also benefit the society.
