Free concerts in the Fraser Valley this August

Plus, free movies, yoga classes, dance lessons, and more

It’s music to your ears—and your wallet. 

There are more than a dozen free concerts happening this month in the Fraser Valley, and we’ve created a new list for August, helping you figure out how to fill your evenings with music without draining your bank account. 

We’ve also collected a few other fun free events, including starlit movie nights, community dance lessons, and outdoor yoga classes.

Concerts

Sounds of Summer

Langley City’s Douglas Park is lighting up with an evening of music each Wednesday night in August. Each concert will feature two local musicians, with the first performance kicking off at 6:30pm and the second at 7:45pm. 

Concerts will feature folk rock on Aug. 7 with the Bargain Shoppers Club and Troy Toma, golden oldies on Aug. 14 with  Danny Bay and Johnny Elvis on Aug. 14, jazz on Aug. 21 with the Quintessential Jazz Band and Linda Szentes and the Jazzlinks, and choral music on Aug. 28 with the Peace Arch Chorus and the Soundscape Chorus

Summer Nights in the Township

The Township of Langley will also host a number of free concert nights at Willoughby Community Park Amphitheatre, just off of 200 Street. Summer Nights in the Township features free performances each Thursday starting at 7pm. 

August’s concerts kick off with Indo-Canadian artist Ranj Singh on Aug. 1, followed by Front Page Band on Aug. 8, Cookin’ with Brass on Aug. 15, Jada Leroux on Aug. 22, and Stephen Scaccia on Aug. 29.

Summer in the Courtyard

Langley residents have more than one option for free concerts on Thursdays, with two singer-songwriters performing at the Willowbrook Mall’s Summer in the Courtyard series this August. Ryan McAllister will perform on Aug. 1 and Aug. 29, while Antonio Larosa takes the stage on Aug. 15.

Concerts in the Park

Over in Hope, the Memorial Park bandshell will stay hopping with a variety of musicians performing throughout the month. The Concerts in the Park series, hosted by the Hope & District Arts Council, began in July and has a different concert each Friday at 6:30pm.

This month, Concerts in the Park will feature artists like alt-country Tyler Del Pino & The Brasstronautz (Aug. 2), heavy groove ensemble Robin Lane & the Rhythm Makers (Aug. 9), soulful singer Sister Speak (Aug. 16), Rod Stewart-esque BF/C (Aug. 23), and country group High & Low with Alton Dean (Aug. 30). 

Music in the Park

A new development on Shxwhá:y land near Chilliwack is hosting its own set of free concerts this month. Cedarbrook, a sprawling new neighbourhood located off Schweyey Road, features Music in the Park with two Friday concerts in August. Singer-songwriter Tyla Jones performs on Aug. 2 starting at 5:30pm, while local musician Andrew Christopher performs on Aug. 16.

Mission Twilight Concert Series

Every Wednesday in August, Mission residents (and visitors too) can head to the Fraser River Heritage Park for a 7pm concert featuring musicians from near and far. On Aug. 7, Inner Wild will perform their eclectic repertoire, while Canadian country singer Patsy Thompson takes the stage on Aug. 14. Folk-country band Roads Unknown will play on Aug. 21, while Madrid’s flamenco-jazz duo Melón Jiménez & Lara Wong will perform on Aug. 28.

Bands on the Beach

For the 15th year in a row, Harrison will welcome a variety of singers, songwriters, and musicians to perform on the village’s popular waterfront. Bands on the Beach takes place on Saturday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 1 and will feature a special Toby Keith tribute concert Saturday evening to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the event. 

Saturday’s concert lineup features indie rocker Blake Harvard (1pm), soothing singers The Sweet P’s (2:15pm), “superband” Peacenik Collective (3:30pm), and country band Canyon Riders (4:30pm). Sunday’s lineup includes blues artist Natalie Faith (1pm), one-man-band Johnny Bootleg (2:15pm), indie rock group Uncle Strut (3:30pm), and Bands on the Beach co-founder Todd Richard & The TR Band (4:45pm).

One-time concerts

August will also play host to a number of free one-night-only concerts throughout the valley. The Rue Saint Georges Sax Ensemble will be in Langley City’s Douglas Park on Tuesday, Aug. 13 for a concert starting at 7pm, playing a variety of Disney tunes, ragtime, and pop hits. Abbotsford’s Mill Lake will host a two-hour symphonic concert by Calvin Dyck’s Songs Strings and Steps orchestra on Friday, Aug. 16 at 6:30pm

Mission’s year-end pool party on Friday, Aug. 23 will also feature a concert by local artists Patrick Anthony, Amy Van Bergen, Miss Shauna, and Mackenzie Widdows. The four musicians participated in The Mission Record storytelling project, and will perform original songs detailing Mission’s history. (You can read our stories about that project here and here.)

On Thursday, Aug. 29, KatMoon will be in Douglas Park for a 5pm concert featuring top hits from the past 50 years. And on Friday, Aug. 9, Cultus Lake Park will host a night of Elvis revelry featuring tribute artist Steve Elliot. 

Other free events

Of course, concerts aren’t the only highly affordable events happening in the Fraser Valley. There are also outdoor movie nights, yoga sessions, and more fun activities you don’t need a full wallet to do.

Outdoor movies

There are a number of free movie nights happening across the Fraser Valley. Trolls Band Together will be shown at James Hill Park on Thursday, Aug. 22 starting at 8:30pm. Willowbrook Mall in Langley will also host free screenings every Wednesday at 6pm: The Lorax (Aug. 7), Hotel Transylvania 3 (Aug. 14), Madagascar (Aug. 21), and Luca (Aug. 28).

Cultus Lake’s movie night will feature two films—The Marvels on Friday, Aug. 9 and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire on Friday, Aug. 16— starting at sunset at the Main Beach. Mission’s Griner Park will host an outdoor movie night on Sunday, Aug. 18 at 6pm, although the organizers haven’t specified what film they’ll be showing. The Cedarbrook development on Schweyey Road in the Chilliwack area will play The Barbie Movie at 8pm on Saturday, Aug. 31.

Dancing

Grab your dancing shoes and head on down to Langley for two free dance lessons this August. On Friday, Aug. 16, Douglas Park Spirit Square will become the dance floor for Dancing for Dessert’s ballroom and Latin classes starting at 7pm. Then, on Friday, Aug. 30, the square will host a free community swing dance with the Rock Step Swing Dance Society. The dance will begin at 7pm with a lesson (no partner required) and continue into the evening with spins, twirls, and sways. 

Yoga and Pilates

Take a stretch and grab your mat for some free lessons across the valley. On Saturday, Aug. 10 starting at 10am, Cedarbrook is hosting a free class by Club Pilates Chilliwack. The lesson is a total-body mat workout and participants must register in advance and bring their own yoga mat. 

In Abbotsford, Jessica Hart is hosting free yoga classes every Wednesday at Jubilee Park starting at 6pm. Register in advance and don’t forget your yoga mat. 

And finally, Cat Williams hosts a yoga playtime at Langley’s Willowbrook Mall each Sunday starting at 10am. No registration is needed for this lesson, but you do need to bring a signed waiver, which you can find online.
