Chilliwack breaks ground on new sports facility with 10 pickleball courts

28,500-square-foot annex will offer flexible multi-use space next to existing Landing Sports Centre

Construction has begun on a major new recreation facility next to the Chilliwack Landing Sports Centre that will bring 10 indoor pickleball courts and flexible space for various sports and community events to the city.

The Chilliwack Landing Sports Centre Annex will span approximately 28,500 square feet, including 27,500 square feet of open, multi-use floor space and a 1,000-square-foot amenity area with washrooms and meeting space. The pickleball courts can be cleared to accommodate different sports and activities as needed. The Chilliwack Pickleball Club will have a dedicated office in the new building.

To put the size in perspective, the new annex will actually be larger than the existing Landing Sports Centre, which offers 24,500 square feet of dry floor space.

The project is funded through the City of Chilliwack's 2025 Financial Plan, along with $1.85 million from the Canada Community Building Fund, $4.715 million from the BC Growing Communities Fund, and a $100,000 donation from the Chilliwack Pickleball Club.

"Our government is proud to support the Landing Sports Centre Annex, which will provide the Chilliwack community with new opportunities for recreation, promote active lifestyles, and offer a welcoming space for people of all ages to connect and thrive," said Gurbux Saini, Member of Parliament for Fleetwood-Port Kells, on behalf of federal Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Gregor Robertson.

BC Housing and Municipal Affairs Minister Christine Boyle said the project reflects the province's commitment to building vibrant communities. "By investing in modern, flexible spaces, we're supporting healthy, active lifestyles and strengthening community connections," she said.

Mayor Ken Popove thanked the federal government, province, and Chilliwack Pickleball Club for their investment. "To see the need for an expansion of a well-used community amenity is positive news for a healthy, thriving community like ours," he said.

The site was chosen for its location adjacent to the existing Landing Sports Centre, which will enhance operations when hosting large events that utilize both facilities.

The Chilliwack Pickleball Club, which has nearly 500 members, expressed excitement about the multi-use facility that will benefit the entire community and provide what they called a "first-class place to play pickleball."
