Friday - August 29 - Police increase enforcement for Langley Good Times Cruise-In

☀️High 30C

Good morning!

So, the fridge just died. It has been quite sickly and temperamental for a while. Some days it worked just fine; on others, it struggled to get through the day. I’m sure we can all relate. Today, it finally decided to give up. It let out one final squeak of dismay, and that was the end.

RIP Fridge, you were awful.

I hated you from the moment I met you, and I’ll be celebrating your much-awaited demise with a shiny new fridge. Of course, the new fridge will set me back about $1,000 with taxes and maybe a bit more with delivery and installation. Then there’s the small problem of all the food spoiling. Fridge didn’t even have the decency to die last winter and chose to keel over now, during a heat wave.

They really don’t make them like they used to. My mom had an avocado green fridge in the ’80s, which is still in my 81-year-old aunt’s apartment, keeping vegetables, milk, and eggs cool and fresh. My aunt refuses to get rid of the thing until one of them dies. I’m betting Avocado Green will outlive us all.

Oh, I almost forgot to add, no newsletter on Monday. Happy Labour Day!

Fraser Health has received two Michael Smith Health Research BC grants of $125,000 to expand its social prescribing program. The new grants will allow more seniors to have access to the program, which connects them to services such as exercise and social activities, and supports healthy nutrition.

The program started in 2019, and by 2020, it had 126 service centres serving more than 2,000 seniors in 15 communities. Fraser Health offers social prescribing in Abbotsford, Agassiz, Chilliwack, Langley, Maple Ridge, and Mission in the Fraser Valley.

“Health is more than just medical concerns, that environmentally and socially, there are issues that can interfere with an older adult from aging, well, aging in place and living a high quality of life,” said Grace Park, physician and clinical research lead, Geroscience and Frailty, Fraser Health.

Police increase enforcement for Langley Good Times Cruise-In

Langley RCMP announced it will be stepping up its enforcement efforts ahead of the Langley Good Times Cruise-In event on Sept. 6. According to an RCMP press statement, enforcement efforts will include:

  • Increased patrols in known gathering areas

  • Traffic enforcement targeting dangerous driving and excessive noise

  • Tickets, vehicle impoundments, and other penalties under the Motor Vehicle Act where appropriate

The RCMP said the increase in large, illegal car gatherings has made it necessary to increase security during the event.

“Unfortunately, in the past two years, police have observed and responded to large, illegal car gatherings in the days leading up to the event,” Langley RCMP said in a statement.

The RCMP said “unsanctioned” gatherings cause unsafe conditions for participants, spectators, and other road users, disrupting residents and increasing complaints.

“We want the Cruise-In to remain a safe and enjoyable event for everyone,” said Sergeant Zynal Sharoom of the Langley RCMP. “We are urging people to refrain from participating in these unlawful gatherings. If you choose to ignore this warning, you risk fines, having your vehicle impounded, and possible criminal charges.”

Each year, the Langley Good Times Cruise-In event draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to Downtown Aldergrove to see the antique cars on display and attend the live musical performances.

According to the event’s official website, during the 2024 event, “Over 100,000 spectators and 1,300 cars filled the streets of Downtown Aldergrove, helping us raise a substantial amount of funds for a number of incredible local charities.”

In 2023, the Cruise-In raised over $100,000 for local charities.
