My riding: Abbotsford
The Abbotsford riding has been held by Conservative Ed Fast for more than a decade, but the city is changing rapidly
The Current is diving into each of the Fraser Valley’s five federal ridings in advance of the 2021 federal election. Read more to learn about the Abbotsford riding, the only riding to include only one municipality. Check back in the coming weeks for more on policies and platforms. Check back in the coming weeks for interviews with the candidates, and information on party platforms.
The Abbotsford riding (click for map) covers much, but not all, of the city (the area north of MacLure and Bateman roads is part of the Mission – Matsqui – Fraser Canyon riding, and significant chunks of farmland in the city’s west are in the Langley-Aldergrove riding). Abbotsford has voted Conservative since it was established in 2004. Conservative Ed Fast, who has held the seat since 2006, earned just over 50% of the vote in 2019. There are approximately 76,000 people in the riding who are eligible to vote in the upcoming election.

What to watch
The riding has been a Conservative stronghold for many years, but Fast’s proportion of the vote has decreased over the past decade as Abbotsford’s demographics have shifted. The Liberals had 22% of the vote last election. The NDP has never topped 20% in the riding. Both parties had more support in the centre of Abbotsford but still lagged behind the Conservatives. Even-stronger Conservative support in the riding’s large farming areas, and the fact that the most Liberal parts of Abbotsford are in the Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon riding, makes this a projected safe seat for the party. 338Canada prediction: CPC safe seat
