Wednesday, September 6, 2023 - Who's pool is it, anyway?

Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023 | Today: ☀️ High 20C

Good morning!

About a month ago, I heard from a member named Phillip who was in hospital and needed us to switch his email address. Last week, he emailed back with the good news that he was out of hospital—and with a simple request.

Phillip was hospitalized after being struck while cycling. He had made a hand signal to indicate he planned to turn but the driver of a van misread the signal and thought it was a cue to pass the cyclist. The van knocked Phillip from his bike, leaving him with a punctured lung, damaged spleen, and a ton of fractured bones. Phillip asked us to remind readers to be aware of cyclist hand signals. The signals aren't complicated, but Phillip said quite a few think the left-hand signal is a message to pass. You can brush up on the hand signals here. Stay safe out there, and we hope you get better soon Phillip!

Mission won’t bar outsiders from swim lessons

Mission will consider pricing swimming lessons differently for non-residents. 📷️ Micheal Brin/Shutterstock

A Mission councillor wants residents to get priority to register for swim classes. But the city will keep swim classes open for all, no matter where they live.

Outsiders, though, could still eventually end up paying more.

Mission’s debate comes amid Chilliwack residents’ ongoing difficulties accessing lessons in their community, and just a year after a similar discussion about the Aldergrove waterpark.

The Current wrote about competitive plowing and the future of the sport last year. Sache’s uncle, Jim, spoke with us for that story. Read it here.

New Indigenous adult education centre opens in Chilliwack

A new adult education centre with free vocational and trades training will open at Sqwá First Nation in Chilliwack.

The centre, in partnership with the Chilliwack School District, will be open to the general public and offer programming that will lead to BC Adult Graduation Diplomas (or Adult Dogwood). Programs offered this September will include adult upgrading, building maintenance, education assistant, carpentry, indigenous entrepreneurial cook, and office administration.

Including vocational and trades training in free adult education programs gives learners the opportunity to advance or change their careers without paying for tuition. Programs begin in September and registrations are currently being accepted.

Correction

Last week, we incorrectly reported that council approved a new code of conduct Monday that will forbid councillors from disparaging colleagues and engaging in bullying. The bylaw was not passed by council and was deferred to a future meeting. Our apologies for the error.
