Xwchíyò:m Market, an Indigenous community market in the Rosedale area, has been shut down temporarily. The market’s operator, Cheam Enterprises Inc., says the decision was made as part of its commitment to the Cheam First Nation’s economic development.

“When the market was established, the vision extended beyond retail operations,” Cheam Enterprises said in a statement last week. “We hoped to create a welcoming gathering place for community members while providing access to local products, services and employment opportunities.”

“Over the past several months, our team has worked hard to support that vision and provide a positive space for the community.”

Cheam Enterprises says that, despite these efforts, the market had “not achieved the level of financial performance required to operate sustainably.”

“This decision was made as part of CEI's ongoing commitment to focusing resources on sustainable economic development opportunities that create long-term value for the Nation.”

The market’s retail operations have been paused, but the space will continue to be used by the First Nation for future community initiatives—it’s currently exploring new ideas, partnerships and entrepreneurial ventures for the building. 

“CEI has invested significant capital into improving and maintaining the facility, and those investments will continue to benefit the community for years to come,” said Cheam Enterprises.

“Although this chapter has closed, we remain optimistic about the future.”

The company did not say when—or if—the market would reopen.
