Cat welfare nonprofit hosting 2 low-cost microchipping events in Abbotsford

The affordable pop-up events are open to any low-income cat owners based in a Fraser Valley municipality

If you’re looking to microchip your cat but are tight on cash, two pop-up events happening in Abbotsford are offering a low-cost solution.

Abby Cat Daddy, a volunteer-run charity for cat welfare in the Fraser Valley, will be running two microchip events at Pawsitive Thrift in Abbotsford this month: one on Sunday and the other on March 20. It typically costs up to $125 to have a cat chipped, but the nonprofit will do it for $25 on those days.

The events, which run from 12-4pm on both days, are specifically for microchipping—no other vet services will be offered.

But microchips are still crucial for protecting your furry friend. They are known to be a reliable and safe way to link your pet to your contact information, substantially increasing the chance of their return.

Anyone who’s had a cat is likely familiar with their particular feline preferences. Not all cats are willing to wear ID collars—and good luck to anyone who attempts to force them into one.

Instead, the chips, about the size of a grain of rice, remain permanently in the pet’s fatty tissue. Once it’s in, they won’t feel a thing.

If a microchipped cat is found and taken to a vet, they can quickly be scanned for the contact information linked to the chip, including the name, address and phone number of their owner.

Getting cats back home means fewer ending up in a shelter or on the street. Reducing overpopulation of strays in the Fraser Valley is one of the primary missions of Abby Cat Daddy.

According to the nonprofit, 40 per cent of lost cats are never reunited with their owners and many strays “were once lost pets that never made it home.”

The organization says the microchipping events are open to low-income caregivers based in Mission, Aldergrove, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Hope and Agassiz who may normally be unable to access these services.
