Friday - Aug. 9, 2024 - More pay parking for Harrison

⛅⛈ High 28C

Good morning!

It’s that time of month again! Time for you all to share your thoughts for the coming FVC Perspectives story. This month, we’re asking you about noisy events, like fireworks, airshows, and other community activities with a bang. Are they worth the stress it puts on animals and certain people? Or should we figure out something new to do?

As always, you can send in your responses via this form, and we’ll share them in an upcoming issue. And if you have something else you want to share, you can always use the open response section at the bottom of the form.

Bounceback month: August’s housing charts

After a June in which home prices seemed to be dipping thanks to increased supply, the following month saw that momentum halt.

For our ongoing (and evolving) monthly look at the Fraser Valley’s housing market, we’ve compiled a dozen different custom charts to give readers a sense of prices in four different communities and three different home types.

This feature is a recurring segment in The Current, but the charts are still a work in progress, so let us know what other data you might like to see.

If you want the raw data you can find it here: Fraser Valley Real Estate Board | Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board.

New pay parking lot considered for Harrison

Two empty lots on Harrison’s waterfront could be temporarily transformed into more pay parking spots, if Harrison’s council approves.

The owner of two lots on Esplanade Avenue has submitted an application to council to turn them into a 64-spot parking lot. The vacant parcels are next to a newly-constructed residential building and across from the village’s main waterfront near the boat launch. The temporary use permit, if approved, would only last until 2026. After that time, the parking lot would need to be removed if the permit is not extended.

Like nearly all waterfront parking in Harrison, the parking lot would be paid parking only. However, the revenue would go to the property owner rather than the village.

Harrison residents are able to provide their comments on the proposed parking lot in a public hearing at 7pm on Monday, Aug. 12. Afterwards, Harrison’s three-person council will decide on the fate of the proposal. Former Coun. John Allen had expressed concerns about the proposed parking lot, but he has resigned his seat to run for mayor in the upcoming by-election and will not be able to vote on the proposal.
