Mother's Day falls on a Sunday this year, which makes it a natural day for a 5k run along the Vedder River — especially one raising money for the maternity unit at Chilliwack General Hospital.
Run for Mom takes place May 10 at Vedder Park along the Rotary Trail, with registration opening at 8 AM and the run starting at 9 AM. Entry is $10 for participants 13 and under, $20 for everyone else. All proceeds go toward a new fetal monitor for CGH's maternity unit.
"All funds raised at Run for Mom will stay local to support Chilliwack General Hospital," says Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation executive director Liz Harris.
The event is open to runners and walkers alike, and there's plenty going on beyond the run itself. Face painting for kids kicks things off before the start, McDonald's will be on site with coffee and muffins, and the Abbotsford Canucks and JR 89.5 Street Team will make appearances. All participants receive a keepsake medal and a potted plant from Minter Country Garden.
The top fundraiser will take home a Supercycle Pathway Comfort Bike donated by Canadian Tire Chilliwack, and prizes will be awarded for the top three men's and women's finishers. Door prizes and surprise giveaways round out the day.
Those who can't attend in person can still support the cause by setting up a fundraising page through JustGiving.
