Where to watch Fraser Valley Remembrance Day ceremonies

Many of the Fraser Valley’s communities are honouring veterans and soldiers with virtual Remembrance Day ceremonies this year, although at least one group has opted for an in-person event.

Check out the list below to see which events are happening in your community.

Abbotsford

Abbotsford: VirtualThe Abbotsford Legion and the City of Abbotsford are hosting this year’s ceremony, called Remembrance in Place. The ceremony will be held virtually starting at 10:30am on Nov. 11. Residents are encouraged to place a poppy in their window. View the ceremony at abbotsford.ca/remembrancelive.

Chilliwack

Chilliwack: VirtualThe now-joined Chilliwack Legion’s are holding an invitation-only Remembrance Day event at All Sapper’s Memorial Park. In-person attendance is restricted between 6am and 1pm on Nov. 11. A livestream of the ceremony will begin at 10:35am on the Sardis Legion’s Facebook page.

Hope

Hope: Invite-only in-personThe Hope Legion is holding an in-person ceremony at the Hope Cenotaph, but is asking the general public not to attend so veterans can mark the day safely. Only 50 people are able to attend, and the number is limited to officials, veterans, and those needed to conduct the ceremony. Anyone wanting to place a wreath at the cenotaph may do so before 10:45am on Nov. 11, or after the ceremony. More details are available on the Hope Standard website.

District of Kent

Agassiz: Limited in-personThe Agassiz Legion is hosting a small ceremony at the Agassiz Cenotaph starting at 10:45am. Wreaths will be laid at the cenotaph before the ceremony. The Agassiz Harrison Observer will livestream the event on its Facebook page.

Mission

Mission: VirtualThe Mission Legion will be holding a ceremony at the Mission Cenotaph, but residents are asked to tune in to the livestream rather than attending in-person. The ceremony will begin at 10:50am on Nov. 11, and will be streamed to the Legion’s Facebook page.

Langley

Aldergrove: VirtualThe Aldergrove Legion will be holding a virtual ceremony this year, to be livestreamed from the Aldergrove Legion Cenotaph starting at 10:30am. You can view the ceremony on the Aldergrove Legion Facebook page.

Fort Langley: VirtualThe Fort Langley cenotaph will see an in-person ceremony this year, but the general public is discouraged from attending. A large area of the cemetery will be cordoned off to allow those required to participate to maintain social distancing, and there will be no public access to the cenotaph until noon. The public can watch a livestream of the ceremony starting at 10:15am through the Fort Langley Remembers website.

Murrayville: VirtualA virtual ceremony will be livestreamed from the Murrayville Cenotaph at 10:30am on Nov. 11, and can be viewed here.

Arboretum and Botanical Society of Langley: In-personThe Arboretum and Botanical Society of Langley will end its Month to Remember at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum with a ceremony at 2pm on Nov. 11. The event was initiated to commemorate the 10 years since the start of troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, the 70 years since the Battle of Gaepyong, and 100 years since the Legion started its poppy program. Speakers at the arboretum event include Michael Chang, the executive director of the Korean War Veterans Association, MPs Tako Van Popta and John Aldag, acting mayor Margaret Kunst, and Walk to Remember co-founders Elizabeth and Michael Pratt.

City of Langley: Pre-recordedIn lieu of a traditional Remembrance Day ceremony, the City of Langley is asking residents to watch a pre-recorded video the city put together last year. (To observe the moment of silence at 11am, start the video at 10:55am.) The city is also has a list of other ways people can observe Remembrance Day without attending a ceremony.
