Fraser Valley Current

Tuesday, August 22, 2023 | 🌤/🚬 High 22C | Air quality advisory

Good morning!

Last night my kids and I watched Marcel The Shell With Shoes On. It’s a cute stop-motion animation movie rated 13+ seemingly only because its plot is quite slow. Now, as I write this, the kids are elsewhere in the house making their own stop-motion movie they’re calling The Bear Chronicles. So far, the main part of the plot seems to involve a stuffed bear falling off a table. But however it turns out, it’s infinitely better on my eardrums than the rendition of Eiffel 65’s Blue (Da Ba Dee) that my daughter was repeatedly belting out two hours ago.

Small towns, big changes

The Fraser Valley’s small communities have a fraction of the population of their larger neighbours. And yet many of them have seen even more transformative changes over the past two decades. Each has changed in their own unique ways, sometimes at the hands of man, sometimes at the whim of Mother Nature.

The Agenda

A public information meeting will be held Tuesday on a large proposed development near Lake Errock. 📷 FVRD/Bing Maps

Large proposed Lake Errock development goes to public

The public will get a close look Tuesday at plans for a very large development near Lake Errock.

GWEB Holdings wants to redevelop a gravel pit and build 155 homes, 113 townhomes and apartment buildings with 67 units.

The development would be the largest in the area in decades, if not ever. FVC previously reported on the plans last November. Since then, the potential size of the project has increased even further. A full site plan has since been developed, and the Fraser Valley Regional District will host a public information meeting Tuesday to gather feedback from nearby residents. The FVRD’s board has yet to formally consider the project, and its support is necessary for the project to proceed.

The meeting will be held at Deroche Community hall from 6 to 8pm. Documents and plans for the development can be viewed online.

BC Hydro infrastructure sustained significant damage along the Highway 1 corridor 📷 Ministry of Transportation

Highway 1 re-opening must wait for damage assessments

The re-opening of Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon will need to wait until an engineer assesses potential damage to a key bridge.

The Kookipi Creek fire charged through the Falls Creek gully on Jackass Mountain, where 2021’s atmospheric river swept away a large segment of highway. A long, one-lane temporary metal bridge was constructed to ferry traffic over the gully. Before the highway is re-opened, an engineer will have to determine whether the bridge was damaged, A Transportation Ministry staffer told The Current in an email.

Other assessments must be done on slopes and trees along the highway. Those began Monday, the ministry tweeted during the afternoon, though it’s unclear the scale of work that must be done. BC Hydro crews are also repairing damage. Photos released Monday can be seen here.

The highway could take some time to re-open. And when it does, more closures could be necessary. Highway 4 on Vancouver Island has seen prolonged and regular closures after a wildfire earlier this year destabilized the slope above the road.
