Thursday, May 4, 2023 edition — Mission plots a $50 million road and bridge

Good morning!

I understand what I am about to say may be extremely controversial, but I have found myself cheering against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL playoffs this year. I find the organization’s fan base, and I mean this is the nicest way possible, can be a little sour. To some degree, that is completely warranted considering that, prior to this year, the team hadn’t advanced past the first round in years, let alone won a Stanley Cup.

On the weekend I was at a restaurant that was showing game six against Tampa in the first round. If the Leafs won they would advance to the second round. When the Leafs scored in the second period, a man jumped out of his seat and shouted in celebration. Later in the third, Tampa came back to tie the game and my table had a natural reaction to the goal too. That seemed to upset the man because he immediately got up and left the restaurant.

Anyway, it’s all in the spirit of sport. Someone has to win. It could be the Leafs. But I hope my honesty about who I’m rooting against doesn’t create any enemies (like Grace’s grandpa, who is a die-hard fan). But I’m curious where you stand on the Leafs. Take our poll below and let me know.
