Castle Fun Park sues insurers for $6 million to cover flood damage

Abbotsford amusement attraction says it incurred more than $10 million in damages after 2021 storms

At $18 a round, the rebuilt minigolf attraction at Castle Fun Park in Abbotsford seems expensive for mini golf. But a new lawsuit suggests one reason why.

In the suit filed in November, the popular amusement business alleges its insurers have shorted them by nearly $6 million in compensation, leaving them to pay most of the cost to repair the facility after 2021’s devastating flood.

The lawsuit

Castle Fun Park, the beloved Abbotsford amusement attraction, was one of the highest-profile victims of the 2021 flood that inundated Sumas Prairie. Located near the Whatcom Road interchange, the facility’s basement, which housed two popular mini-golf courses, was completely destroyed.

One of the indoor mini-golf courses was an underwater-themed “Coral Sea” adventure. In a Facebook post during the disaster, the course’s owners, the Wiebe family, nodded to the change in fortunes, noting that they had “three underwater mini golf courses now.”

The flood also destroyed or damaged the facility’s outdoor minigolf course, along with Castle Fun Park’s batting cages, remote control boats, target hockey, laser maze and soccer kick attractions.
