Fraser Valley Current

Good morning!

We’re back with The Current’s weekly events list for members. It’s quite lengthy so it does require a little more work on our end than putting together our old Around Town section, but it’s a great way for a reporter to learn about all the fun events happening across the Fraser Valley. And if you’re not a member you can still refer to our April events story here.

Thanks to Mary, Lando, and Walter for recently starting a membership with The Current and supporting local journalism. Find out here how you can join too.

Takeaway—without the throwaway

Brown paper boxes crusty with the garlicky remains of a takeout order pile up under the counter, waiting, impatiently, for trash day. The smell sours. Flies buzz.

Finally, after a week, the greasy cardboard vanishes into garbage trucks. The problem no longer lives under the kitchen sink. But takeout trash filling landfills is a problem of its own— and a growing one.

Today, Grace writes about the problem of takeout trash and a possible solution in Chilliwack—and, if it works, the rest of the valley.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR COLLEGE ADMISSION COUNSELING

Attend a free International Universities Fair

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) invites students, parents, and counsellors to explore the university search process at the International Universities Fair in Vancouver on Saturday, Apr. 29, 2023 from 1–4pm.

The Agenda

Chilliwack high school getting much-needed expansion

Chilliwack’s Sardis Secondary School is getting a major expansion to accommodate its growing student population. The school’s property is currently packed with portables, but the province has pledged $40 million to build a two-storey expansion to accommodate 400 more students.

That will bring the school’s capacity to 1,600.

The school is located in one of the fastest-growing parts of the province. Across the Chilliwack School District, enrolment has been growing by between 350 and 500 students each year, according to the district’s long-term facilities plan. To accommodate that growth, the district says it will need to build three new elementary schools and one more secondary school.

Throwback Thursday

Men pause before or after a soccer game at the St. Alice Hotel on the Harrison waterfront in 1901.

The St. Alice Hotel was the area's first hotel and helped Harrison Hot Springs become a popular tourist destination.

It was named after Governor James Douglas's hell-raising daughter. Grace Kennedy wrote about Alice, who, her father wrote, was as "proud as Lucifer." You can read that story here.
