Harrison’s skating rink closed for 2021

Starlight Skating Rink won't be coming to Harrison Hot Springs' waterfront this year because of COVID-19 concerns.

After only two years, Harrison Hot Springs artificial outdoor rink has been put on ice. The Starlight Skating Rink opened in November 2019 as a way for the village to extend its tourist season, launching the rink at the same time as Lights by the Lake. The rink, which is typically located at the boat launch parking lot and put away during the summer, was scheduled to open this November. However, the COVID-19 restrictions for the Fraser East region made the village rethink their plans.

Although the restrictions do not specifically apply to skating rinks, village staff decided the risk to participants would be too great if they did not put additional safety measures in place, such as fencing to limit participants and staff to verify vaccinations. There are not enough village staff to follow through on those safety measures, and a release said they didn’t have enough time to find a contractor to do it. The rink is expected to open again next November.
